Oh Mexico I'd sure like to go

When I think of Mexico I think of chilis, margaritas, beer - all the wonderful, edible delights that come from a vast country of culinary styles. I do not think of contemporary, sustainable furniture design - at least not until now.

According to the website, Pirwi is a Mexico-based home furniture brand committed to high quality, green manufacturing and good design. Founded by industrial designers, Emiliano Godoy and Alejandro Castro in 2007, today's collection includes over 70 objects by 12 designers and features cutting-edge pieces as well as award-winning designs now considered classics of contemporary Mexican design.

With a set of Cubos modular bookcases (flash site *sigh* go to Pirwi and click the product selection) made of Birch plywood who needs a closet at all? I'm seeing a sustainable display case for my shoes!

You said it yourself, when I think of Mexico, furniture definitely doesn't come to mind. But I love a lot of these pieces! I tend to like more modern looking furniture, and I feel like these pieces have that kind of feel to it while being environmentally conscious at the same time. Some of my favorites are the room dividers and the bookshelves as well.

I think it is good to know that designers everywhere are manufacturing products with green manufacturing and eco friendliness in mind. It is evident by these pieces that being environmentally conscious can only benefit a design and make these finished products aesthetically and environmentally pleasing. I hope these unique designs inspire other designers that green design can be good design.

I love this furniture. The sleek and light look of it seems like it could match any decor. Being sustainable is something I did not associate with Mexico, but not designers and artists every where seem to be catching on. I love the intricate designs on the screen room dividers, I think that's what they are. The light wood is also a nice look to the furniture.

I really enjoy the dramatic geometric shapes of the furniture. It gives these designs a clean, new, modern look. It definitely makes this brand standout more than just because it is based from Mexico. I like the benches the most because of it's curved seat and multiple peg like legs. Very interesting.

Wow! I love the pieces in this collection. I especially love the room dividers, and the knit chair. This furniture is interesting and beautiful AND green. This just proves the two really can go hand in hand with each other. I love that the knit chair takes the concept of bringing smaller pieces together to make something beautiful, I feel like this really speaks to the concept of sustainability. Their bookcases sort of remind me of the ikea bookcases except these are eco-friendly so it's all the better. Great find!

Also, I love the James Taylor referenced title. Great song!

Those room dividers are completely gorgeous, and also the first ones I've seem that weren't exceedingly basic. Not to mention they come from an environmental perspective. I like how all of the pieces look natural, or at least made from natural materials like wood and leather. The look and design of the furniture is also super modern, which you don't always see when companies decide to focus on being environmentally sound.

Have you caught those mexico commercials recently? They are a clever counteract to the negative publicity Mexico has been getting in the last few years. "The place you thought you knew" is their tagline. It just reminds us that there is so much we don't know about Mexico! this post about the sustainable furniture proves that point even more. They may love their tequila but at leat THEY are passing out on eco friendly couches!

Mexico doesn't seem like a country that has invested a lot in eco-friendly lifestyles so it is great to see that there are designers there using green manufacturing. I think the fact that people all over the world are making an effort to protect the environment is extremely promising.

These furnitures definitely changed my impression of Mexico. I love the integrity of organic forms and materials and the repetition of geometric shapes in their design. I especially love the X family bookshelves, if possible I totally wanna own one. I see similar design in a Japanese show and was blown away by it. It changed the perception of how we place our books and everyday items. I also love how the wood grain texture are being shown natually. It looks totally organic and chic at the same time.

I think these a great pieces, and best of all they are eco friendly. It just goes to show how good design can only benefit from being green. The style of these pieces is simple yet modern. I'm sure there are a lot of other Mexican green projects going on, but this is a great example since everything in the collection is so aesthetically pleasing and effortless.

I love the designs of the furniture by Pirwi as well as their views on sustainability. It's great to see that businesses in other places of the world are being more conscious of the environment. The designs are geometric, modern, and sleek, which would appeal to many people. By combining both good design and sustainable products, it's no wonder this company has been so successful in such a short amount of time.

I think its very interesting how these designers not only think of creating sustainable peices from the materials standpoint but also from the thought that if they design for the future their customers will keep the furniture longer therefore lengthening each peices lifetime. Furniture usually isnt the first thing that comes to my mind when I think about going green however I think it is an excellent place to start especially since we often are more willing to spend more money and invest in pieces of furniture that we buy because we know that the quality will be better and we will keep it for a long time.

I've been to Mexico, and I LOVED IT! I think Mexico has a way of getting a bad reputation but with designers and brands doing their part I think people's minds may slowly change. I absolutely loved these designs, especially the room dividers. My mom and I always try to find interesting items around the house that can be transformed into dividers and headboards. We usually think big such as picket fences, shutters, large mirrors, etc. but these designs gave me ideas to think smaller. I think by using found objects and recreating them is another great way to be eco-friendly.

High end furniture design surely does not come to mind when I think of Mexico as well, nor does green manufacturing. I'm glad that designers are trying to better themselves as well as break the stereotype of their country/industry. I really enjoy the furniture and think that most people will enjoy the modern look of it as well as the earth friendly design behind it.

I agree 100% that when I think of Mexico I think of beaches, resorts, cheap tequila and clubs. I would have never thought of a green furniture manufacturer. It is nice to know that more countries and people are becoming aware of the sustainable lifestyle. These products are green and not to mention really awesome! They have a very modern look and I would definitely consider purchasing from these designers.

I guess some companies will surprise you. I definitely never thought sustainable furniture from Mexico. I think spicy ethnic foods. The pieces were really awesome thought and also seemed really versatile.

When I think of sustaianable furntiture design I think of my history of modern design class and my product design class. Both of these classes taught me how sustainable materials are always important to include in a design, but with this you also need to consider how much of that material you are using. By the way Pirwi furniture looks you can definitely tell that they are not using an abundance of this Birch plywood, but to get the idea of over-using think about a lazy-boy or something that uses an abundance of material. This is good if the material is sustainable but is still using excess...
