Sustainable accessories of Note

One of my favorite sustainable living stores is Sustainable-NYC. Located at 139 Avenue A at 9th Street, it is one of the boutiques I was introduce to last year on a Green Shop Tour. This shop offers up a variety of sustainable home and fashion products, as well as, offering workshops and seminars. Here's a look at some new product the shop is featuring for Fall from their newsletter:

"The Mighty Wallet™ made from Tyvek®(think express mail envelopes) is tear-resistant, water-resistant, expandable and, most importantly, recyclable.

-Printed with SGS Certified environmentally friendly Ink. 100% recyclable packaging made from recycled PET plastic.

-2 interior pockets, 2 credit card pockets (holds approx 16 cards) and 2 quick access business card pockets.

The Blow Out Wallet is re-purposed from recycled bike inner tubes from mountain bikes and bike shops around the country.

-Unique, waterproof, non-marking inner tube exterior.

-Interior is made from 100% Recycled P.E.T. equipped with 6 sleeve pockets for cards and ID's 2 full-length bill pockets for cash & receipts.

The OWL Taxi Wallet is made with 100% recycled post- industrial leather, renewable natural rubber, natural tanning oils, and lead-free dyes.

- A clear pocket on the back keeps your ID or transit card handy. An interior security pocket holds credit cards.

- The easily accessible outside pocket is perfect for business cards and receipts. A snap pouch keeps a pocketful of change from jangling in your jeans.

A new line of beauty products has arrived at Sustainable NYC! IntroducingSustainable Fair Trade Skin Care " Alaffia".

I love the first wallet..the Mighty Wallet. What a great idea! I love that the materials are 100% recyclable. Are these wallets cost efficient as well? I also love Alaffia. After reading this blog, I went to their website and ordered the Vanilla Almond shea butter. My skin is always dry and needs hydration, but many other moisturizers don't work. I love the idea behind Alaffia and therefore it appealed to me to try this product. It's also very inexpensive, at $11.00 for a jar. I love that that their "body care products [are] made with unrefined, natural ingredients free of harmful chemicals, such as parabens and petroleum derivatives." I prefer to put something natural on my skin, then chemical-created products we have so predominantly sold in American stores. It's also amazing that they use "10% of [their] sales for community enhancement projects in Togo, West Africa and locally in Washington State." I am currently awaiting my product, but with such a great cause, I already want to purchase more.

These wallets are great! Did you see daily candy today? there is a new eco-friendly maid service operating in Atlanta - they use only homemade organic cleaners-They'll even do your laundry!

The Mighty Wallet is amazing. I love that it's 100% recyclable and tear-resistant. It looks like it holds so much. I would definitely spend money on that wallet. The Blow Out Wallet sounds really interesting, too, though. Who wouldn't want a unique wallet made of recycled inner tube/tire? It'll be fantastic, and who knows, maybe it'll start a trend of recyclable wallets and purses.

These wallets are so unique and I absolutely love the fact that they are made from recycled goods. The mighty wallet is just the type of wallet I need. Every wallet I have always takes a beating and I have to get rid of it after just a few months. I feel like the mighty wallet would last me a lot longer than any ordinary one especially since it is water resistant, tear resistant and expandable.s I am glad you wrote about Sustainable-NYC. I have been looking for such a store and looks like I have found one. I like the fact that they sell beauty products as well. It makes the company so much more appealing.

Cool idea with the wallets! I like the variety of designs the Mighty Wallet offers. They remind me of those products made from
recycled billboards
. Alaffia products also seem really great. I love that they are fair trade in addition to eco-friendly. I think the issue of fair trade is often overlooked in this "green" era. Closer attention should be paid to this issue especially in the fashion industry, specifically
cotton
.

I actually saw a news segment a while back about these. I have loved them ever since! They remind me of the wallets I used to buy in high school- artists' series illustrated paper that was sewn between layers of thin plastic. They, of course, weren't eco-friendly, but they had a similar visual aesthetic. I love that there s a great new alternative to those plastic wallets that I used to love!

This wallet business makes me really happy and upset at the same time. Looking through the Mighty Wallet site I am very tempted to buy the Elysium Mighty Wallet to join my collection of Poketo wallets I have gathered over the years. As for the Blow Out wallet, that is a really interesting and innovative use for tires to add on to the other ways I have seen that material been used. Like the jewelery Christiane Diehl has designed. (http://www.greatgreengoods.com/2008/04/27/recycled-bicycle-tire-jewelry/) The OWL taxi wallet is also really cute and gives a more refined edge of recycled material. I'll muddle over it for the next few days until I make the big dive to more spending.
