Columbia Sportwear Saves some Trees

More on packaging. Columbia Sportswear decided to offer their customers shipping in used boxes through their e-commerce site. More than 2/3rds of the customers are participating. In true Social Media tradition, Columbia has added to eco-friendly fun. Customers can now follow their box as it is used by others, adding pictures and stories about the journey. What a great way to raise awareness about environmental issues surrounding packaging. Another example of going green and saving $$$.

I think this a great idea in order to save on packaging. It is also a good way to leave a piece about yourself and supporting sustainability. However I am a little confused as to how they actually receive the recycled boxes. Do you have to send back your packaging to Columbia? If so isn't shipping it back also a waste of resources?

I think this is a fabulous idea. Other businesses should give it a go. I think it would really help consumers get into recycling their old boxes if they can track them to see where they are or where they're going. I am still wondering how they reuse the boxes, though. Do you ship them back? Do you have to pay to ship them back?

That is such a fun idea. I wish more businesses would get involved with this idea. I am also confused how this process works, specifically how to reuse the boxes. Do they pay the shipping fee for you to return the box? Is return shipping already paid with a label provided? If not, it seems slightly inconvenient for the consumer. But hey, if you want to be eco-friendly, this is a great way to go. It's neat to track something tangible as it travels around the world. What a creative idea. :)

This is a great idea for a company to adopt. I actually recently found some online companies that also advertise used cardboard boxes for moving purposes. The idea is that instead of going out to buy new boxes when you move, you would instead order used boxes through the website. It's a great idea, but like Mary D. mentioned, where do all of these used boxes come from? It would be interesting to know.

I think the interactivity aspect of this project is what's going to to make it successful. People that don't normally recycle may be more likely to pass their box along if they are part of making a story. Making a recycling project like this fun and interesting is going to make more people apt to participate.

Brilliant idea. I also am a bit lost as to how the method of returning the boxes to the company works. I feel this can work for so many other companies as well. In addition, I feel people would be willing to participate and go the extra step to go green. I really like the idea of consumers adding pictures and stories about their box through its journey. I mentioned this idea to a few friends and they were very much attracted to it.

This is such a fun idea, and would be smart for other companies to do it now that it is time for the holidays. Hopefully the idea has caught on with others since they started this a few months ago. Its always interesting to see what people have to add to the box to. There are a few questions about this idea, like does it cost money to ship the box back? Its easy enough for people to just reuse the boxes they get for other things if this whole process is more of an inconvenience.
