To be honest, clothing and the way we consume is the last way I would expect to be able to impact the environment in a positive way, which is ironic because the impact it could make is pretty incredible. It makes senses that it would be the last thing on consumer’s minds, though, because shopping for clothing is either a necessity or a way of bettering one’s appearance. I think the typical consumer is also really sick of the concept of “green.” Most people I have come into contact with about the subject think either that it is a fad that will disappear in a few years or it’s the retailing world’s way of making a not-so-honest buck.
I remember working with the Career Wardrobe freshman year for my University 101 volunteer work. I thought that the program was such a wonderful idea. I loved hearing the stories of underprivileged women coming in to get work clothes and leaving feeling beautiful and empowered. It was really inspiring. I think people should realize that being “green” doesn’t always need to deal with the typical media idea of what that entails in buying into certain products. It can also be something like the Career Wardrobe that is not only recycling clothing but providing a wonderful service. Maybe if more people have that mindset the green fad will transcend to being a lifestyle, which I hope to see.
